Greg EplerWood, Managing Director

Greg joined the Alliance in 1979 while a graduate student at Iowa State University, after temporarily interrupting his career as a professional documentary filmmaker.  His three decades of active membership in our organization, and subsequent careers in media education, community media center management and consulting in cable regulatory matters has prepared Epler Wood for helping the Alliance meet its organizational and advocacy goals.

Born and raised in Reading, Pennsylvania (home of BCTV.org, one of our oldest and most community-anchored public access institutions), Epler Wood has a B.S. degree in Chemistry from Ursinus College.  After four years in the USAF and as a production manager, cinematographer, editor and director of educational films, political campaign spots and industrial propaganda for a Washington, DC film company, he decided to change directions to pursue community media and teaching opportunities.

At ISU, after organizing a week of local programming on two of ISU’s unused educational access channels as part of his mass communication/curriculum development/telecommunicative arts graduate program, Epler Wood was hooked on community television.  However, returning to Washington, DC with his newlywed, Megan, a faculty opportunity drew him to the American University’s School of Communication where over a ten-year period from 1983 he taught several media production courses, managed a summer institute and also, parallel to his academic pursuits and with his wife, produced several wildlife documentaries for national video and television distribution.  All the while, however, he kept an active hand in advancing the cause of community media through several leadership roles in the Alliance, edited the first Community Resource Media Directory and helped launch DCTV, public access for the District of Columbia.

The Epler Woods moved to Bennington, Vermont in 1990 where three years later Greg was hired to start up Catamount Access Television in that town, serving as its executive director until 2000.  During that decade, his experience as an occasional consultant for the State’s Department of Public Service, and later guiding CAT-TV through its successful negotiation for funding from Adelphia Cable before the Public Service Board, Epler Wood was unknowingly preparing for a new career direction—consulting.

Greg and his wife relocated north to Burlington in 2000, where he began providing strategic planning, community needs assessments and contract negotiation preparedness to community media organizations around the state.  To better serve his clients, Epler Wood earned a certificate in Paralegal Studies from Woodbury College; attended extended workshops in mediation/conflict resolution, philanthropy and development; and graduated in 2003 from the Snelling Center’s Vermont Leadership Institute program.
